01.03.11 Waikawa to Okiwi Bay Scenic Reserve
Today we were on the road after mid morning coffee!! We drove first to Katoa Point just North of Waikawa. It is a historic Moari village site, and also a lovely lookout point over The Queen Charlotte Sounds. The present day Maori still live in the area which is great. Their carving skills are still very good as demonstrated by a modern carved pole at the reserve.
We headed north towards Blenheim stopping at 12 .51 for a 2 min silence for the church earthquake victims and their families.
We followed the N1 south towards Kaikoura stopping 24 km north at Okiwi Bay Scenic Reserve where the camping is free. The site is 20metres from the beach with the forest as a back drop…can't be bad. So we walked along the beach, played skimming stone and had a who can balance the most stones competition and who can hit the wooden stick with the best of 10 stone competition before making our way back to the ensuite on wheels to prepare fajitas for supper. This is L&Js speciality!!!
I have just finished reading A survivor from Khmer Rouge Prison S -21 by Bou Meng so I'm hoping to start a lighter novel this evening.
