3rd - 4th Jan:Auckland Arrival and Stay
Arrived lunch time and were taken for special examination by customs as we weren't part of a package trip!!!Our walking boots passed musta and we caught the airport transfer to Queens Street and our 2 night stay at Chifley Suites. It was exactly as the internet had described, a short walk to both the harbour and the Sky Tower.Lovely accommodation included 2 double bedrooms, kitchen, utility including washer/dryer and lounge. All products were provided including teas, coffee, milk.Very good, especially after flying for what seemed like days!
We dusted ourselves down and went out for late lunch, followed by an early evening stroll round the harbour. Here we came upon our first minor difficulty....my flip flop broke, at the furthest point of the walk...after the shops had closed!I flip walked pretending that absolutely everyone walked with one flip and a foot right round the rest of the harbour, passed all the people dining, through the main street, into the smart foyer of our suite...where a resident just stared at my non existent right footwear, and home for a foot wash and rest!!!What a giggle we had.
Next morning first on the agenda was to flip walk down the road to Queens street to buy me some replacement flips...couldn't possibly wear my walking boots with summer dress.Problem solved with some Roxy footwear we caught the bus to where we picked up our hire car. This was a 40min ride through Maori countryside to a small Maori village where the locals guided us to the address. Our car was waiting and we were soon speeding back to Auckland where luckily it was a bank holiday which meant the street parking close to our suites was free.Note, car parking in Auckland is extortionate so never collect a car until you leave unless it's a bank holiday! After lunch we enjoyed a visit to the sky tower which lead nicely into a wander to the harbourside for evening meal.We managed to sample small pieces of steak, mussels, prawns, lamb and scallops all cooked by us at our table on a hot stone. This was pleasantly washed down by Marlborough Wine.
