04.03.11 Springfield to Arthers Pass, to Christchurch, to Auckland
We took our time showering and breakfasting in the still sunny morning. Because it was such a beautiful day we thought we would drive towards Arthers Pass and then back to Christchurch. We began our day with the obligatory coffee break at the local Springfield café. Then we drove up into the pass. We stopped a couple of KM short of the village at Arthers Pass because it was raining and very cloudy through the other side. The drive in was lovely. We stopped at Castle Hill which is a spectacular natural arrangement of limestone boulders, inspected a ski resort village of log cabins called by the same name, stopped at Bealey Spur, passed Lake Pearson and stopped there for a picnic lunch. Here we saw asome yellow crested grebes which are very rare, only 200 in New Zealand..
Headed back to towards Christchurch passing Broken River ski resort en route. We tried out an alpine themed café for afternoon tea.
The car hire people dropped us at Christchurch Airport in time to catch our evening flight to Auckland.
