25.02.11 Nelson to Picton
This morning was bright and breezy and the view from our camper was stunning. We enjoyed a lazy breakfast which lead into coffee and then left for Picton. Liz and Jim are doing the Queen Charlotte Walk Saturday, Sunday and Monday so Damian and I are going to base ourselves around the Picton area.
We stopped for some fresh steamed green mussels from Havelock, and Damian tried a whitebate patty, a sort of omlette with whole whitebait looking out from within!.. Very good actually. The fisherman steamed the mussels and made the patty on a gas burner and was using his 'catch of the day. Yum, yum!
Stayed on the Top Ten site in Picton which is over priced and more or less a car park with smart showers and a laundry…this is the second Top Ten site we've stayed on in New Zealand and we will never do so again. They market themselves very cleverly to all the camper companies and the tourist board but they really are below the standard of other sites and the price is inflated…however they have the power to rent sites in very central locations eg walking distance from the Picton ferry and all the shuttles for the Charlotte Sound, hence the reason for our stay this evening.
PS It was Liz's turn to cook this evening and she decided to cook roasted vegetables using the camp site oven…sadly the oven did not come up to temperature so she ended up frying them after 2 hours of waiting…think we'll ask for some money back as the site is failing in it's contract!
26.02.11 Picton
Liz and Jim were up and out early for their 3 day walk so we had the luxury of the 6 berth camper to ourselves!! After breakfast and washing chores we spent the day walking around the sound near Picton. We took the Snout's Head path and after a 2 hour strole enjoyed a well placed seat overlooking the Charlotte Sound. It was beautifully clear so we sat and watched the Inter Islander ferry make it's way up the sound and turn into the hidden passage to make it's exit into the straits between South and North Island.
On returning to Picton we rewarded ourselves with an enormous boysenberry ice cream…how naughty! We managed to pass the evening in a leisurely manner before retiring to our large spacious 6 berth hotel on wheels.
