Thurs 13.01.11 Taupo to Whakapapa Village Camp After another banquet breakfast we left for Lake Taupo and the Tongariro National Park where we will stay for 4 or 5 days in the National Park. Hopefully we will do a few walking routes including the Tongariro Crossing skirting crater lakes and round the summit of Mount Tongariro. Think we'll be out of touch for 4 or 5 days.
Today we drove to Taupo for coffee overlooking the Lake, then on to the Hukka Falls (a bit like the Swallow Falls in Wales but twice the size. Not as spectacular as we had imagined. After several stops to admire views, we stopped at Turangi to stock up on provisions. We then headed up into the Tongariro National Park. We are camping at Whakapapa Village, the highest camsite in New Zealand. It is a ski resort in winter. It is well set up for The Tongariro Alpine Crossing!!!! We're on the 8am shuttle mini bus at 8am tomorrow morning (total price of 70$) and have had to pay $38 for 2 nights caming!!! Still there are kitchens here, a drying room, a laundry room, and only 10 tents are allowed even a bath!!!!
