Thurs 6th -Friday 7th Jan: Waipoua to Tapotupotu Bay and Cape Reinga
Were on the road by 10am. En route we stopped to walk to a point where we had spectacular views of the sand dunes. Journied via Hokianga Ferry towards Cape Reinga.Stopped for coffee at Kohukohu, lovely views across the bay.Drove to Ahipara, the start of Ninety Mile Beach, stopped for a paddle of course!!!!Made a brief refreshment stop at Kaitaia before finding the most northerly camp site in NZ, a National Park site at Tapotupotu Bay.Pleased to arrive, we erected our bedroom and hit the surf!!!!!Out of this world views, and a clear blue skies. We decided to stay here for 2 nights, taking an early morning dip on Friday before heading to view Cape Reinga.Thought we would walk the 2 hour 30min track, so packed a picnic, put on our walking boots, sun hats and glasses and set off....only to be beaten back by the heat after 40mins!Got the car, drove up there and enjoyed our picnic at a beautiful view point before visiting the cape.Learnt lots about the Maoris,(which I have forgotten!) filled our water bottles with spring water and headed back to the camp site for late afternoon swim...forgot to mention that we had to drive a 40 minute round trip to get food supplies.Cooked supper after swim...fantastic corned beef here. The whole of Northland is just dairy and sheep farming, with the odd densely forested patch.
