27.02.11 Waikawa
Today we took a day off and had a relaxing day. We drove to Waikara which has a marina and a small village beach area. It is set between the hills that we walked in yesterday and is a very tranquil little place. Having wondered round the harbour and mariner we found it was lunch time so we stopped at a restaurant overlooking the marina and just sat, read the papers and watched the activity whilst soaking up the views.
The village has a very spacious and clean camp site with a swimming pool. showers, kitchen, dining area, outside barbeque area with gas barbeque, tables and chairs and a laundry room…and lots of wide grassy tree shaded pitches. Waikawa Marina Holiday Park. It is 5 dollars a person less than the awful over marketed 'top ten ' site in Picton. There are lots of birds here. Mummy Australian quail has just walked by leading her 4 chicks to another bush to feed. There are lots of sparrows, blackbirds and of course our old friend the Tui.
Spent the late afternoon reading before supper and a stole. Have got to get my head into packing for our church camp near the airport, will need to take in water and food for the 2 days and then walk to the airport (2km) with our backpacks..hey ho. We take the van back on Thurs early am, and will get dropped at the site.

Today we relaxed, played camping, filled up the water tank, emtied the other tanks, did a food shop , sat and read, showered, walked into Picton , sat on the waterfront, drove to collect L&J after their Queen Charlotte walk, and cooked supper which we ate al fresco watching the sun go down. Tomorrow we head for Okiwi Bay a small DOC campsite 24km north of Kaikora as L&J are whale watching at 10am on Weds. After that we will try to stay somewhere north of Christchurch before taking the van back on Thursday am. I don't think I'll be able to do any more of this but will be flying out of Christchurch on Friday evening at 8pm for Auckland and our Brunei flight via Brunei, then Dubai and then home.
