Had breakfast sitting outside under the annex before meeting up with our tour guide for our tour through the lava tubes.
The lava tubes were formed by a 'Sheild Volcano' (lava volcano) and the lava has flowed over 1550km along the ground in all directions-generally taking the path of least resistance!
The tubes are formed when the top of the lava flow is cooled by air, creating a crust.
Inside the hot lava continues to flow and drain into the river, thus creating a tube effect.
Over time some sections of the tube have collapsed creating small sections. The one we visited today was 226kms long and very high.
After our tour we had lunch then did a bush walk to Collins Hut, an old wooden hut used in the 1800's (replica). We followed this up with a refreshing swim in the pool.
In the afternoon we joined Keith & Pauline (who we met last night at the campfire) and discussed great places to stop along our travels.
Highlight today: lava tubes
