Had a tour through the Bundaberg Rum Distillery. The smell approaching the site was 'sickly sweet' but still bearable.
There was a large storage pool holding around 600,000 liters of warm Molasses (smelt yummy like licorice) which is used in the Rum process. For every 700ml bottle, 1litre of Molasses is used.
We viewed the wooden barrels used to store the rum for over 2years (industry standard) and also checked out the bottling and packaging shed which was very modern with a robot arm doing the final pallet stacking.
Also included in the tour were two samples each....
**note to self**
a) 10am is too early for rum
b) you don't like rum
c) you still don't like rum
d) don't drink rum
After our rum experience we visited Balgara and found a beach but by now the weather has turned icy!
Visited a turtle conservatory at Mon Repo, this is the beach that turtles migrate to and lay their eggs each year. Interestingly they can lay from 50 up to 140 eggs each time (depending on the breed), they will only lay at night and the sex is determined by the temperature of the sand (warm sand is females, cold sand is males).
By the afternoon the weather is now freezing and dropped to around 13degrees so we hide away in the van with popcorn and hot cocoas!
Highlight today: finding out about the sex of the turtles!
