Childers has a lovely main street but everything else is very run down and feral. There was no sites available at the caravan parks because of the overload of backpackers to the area.
Childers is famous for it's fruit and vegetable picking. It's also famous for the back packer accommodation burning down and killing 15 people. A man was convicted of starting the fire deliberately.
We spent the night in a reserve just out of town and had a good sleep then continued on to Bunderberg (very muggy today- love it!).
Bunderberg is surrounded by sugar cane feilds, which are kept very neat and in uniform height and length rows. The claim to fame here is the birth place of the 'Bundaberg Rum' distillery and Bert Hinkler (first pilot to fly solo from England to Australia).
We both decided to forget looking for work around this area as the intial 'excitement' of getting a picking job has disappeared and we are feeling quite disillusioned.
Our assumptions of getting hired on the spot are incorrect so it looks like we are back on holidays!
Tomorrow we are looking forward to a factory tour through the Rum Factory (and the free samples).
Highlight today: the muggy weather-a sign of the tropics awaiting us!
