Hello again!! Today we are going to be looking back over the weekend after my first two days of school, and I have to say it was a rather fun-filled weekend for me! It starts off Friday night because, as well know know, when it's Friday, Friday, you just gotta get down on Fridays. So, Jenny and I went out to a club for the birthday of one of her friends, and it was actually really interesting to see how it was different to in England. The general atmosphere was the same as you'd expect, packed with people drinking, dancing and enjoying the music in general, but it was the dancing and the music that differed most.
Dominican music, in general, is very different to British or American music. It is just as upbeat, but in a different way, because there is more rhythm and a real latin-y feel to it. The dancing as well was different; it seems in England we are all about moving the arms and jumping about everywhere, but here dancing is definitely all about the hips. Now, seeing as I'm about as talented as a robot when it comes to moving my hips, that made for some rather hilarious dancing lessons that resulted in me finally deciding that to save further embarrassment, I'd just sit down and chat, and that was pretty much my Friday night.
Which brings us round to Saturday! Probably my favourite day of that weekend, it began with me not doing anything for just about the whole day, I got in pretty late the next before so a lie-in was VERY welcome, and then at about half 4 in the afternoon I went off to the cinema to meet a big group of people from various countries, all staying in Santo Domingo with AFS. Only one other person showed up. It was still nice though, we chatted in Spanish, I got to know her, she got to know me, we somehow ended up watching Super 8 in the VIP area of the cinema, which was rather enjoyable. After the film we got pizza, and I had to leave as I was summoned by the familia to go down and meet them at Krispy Kreme, where it was Krispy Kreme's one year birthday!! Turns out Krispy Kreme likes to celebrate these things, and celebrate they did!
There was an area outside: part of it sectioned off was full of skaters doing tricks and whatnot with a rather impressed crowd watching; part of the area was taken up by a pirate ship bouncy castle which a load of kids were playing on, and part of the area was taken up by a stage where a group of dancers were entertaining the rest of the crowd. There were also clowns/entertainers wandering around being generally amusing, and hot fresh original glaze donuts were being served, and it was all nice and chill and we spent a nice chunk of time just hanging out there enjoying all the festivities! After a while, we decided to head off but instead of going home like I thought we were, we went off to a karaoke bar. Not the best idea for me.
You see, first of all I was in a bit of a bad mood in general that day so was not in the mood to do karaoke, secondly I had never done karaoke before and was quite happy not to start now, and thirdly I wasn't anticipating going to a bar so was extremely underdressed compared to everyone else. However, I manned up, performed a shaky version of All Star - Smash Mouth, which seemed to impress everyone anyways because of the speed at which I had to sing at points, and that was me done for the night. It was quite amusing seeing all the other people singing karaoke, seeing which songs I could actually understand the lyrics too, and there were more of those than I thought there would be!
Sunday was a fairly non-eventful day due to the fact that we got in late again and so slept for half of it, and that pretty much rounds up that weekend! We are gradually catching up to my actual time and date, and Jenny just came in with a tray of fresh donuts that she made today (she works at krispy kreme, among other places), so I'm going to pop off now. The photo for this post is Jenny and me enjoying getting into the Krispy Kreme spirit!
Till the next time - Jazzy x
