So, I'm back, and now we skip forwards to Thursday 18th august; my first day of school! School was open a couple of days that week, and you could go to start getting back into the school routine, but attendance that week was not compulsory so I only went for the one day. On the Thursday there were only 5 other people in my class, two of them girls who could speak English. It was a really surreal day because the lessons didn't seem as structured, rules seemed to be less strictly enforced than in my school in England; People just sit where they like in whatever lesson, talk with each other almost whenever they want (And my GOD when there's a group discussion it's loud, people feel the need to shout across the room and Dominicans shout LOUD!)
All in all it was a bit of an odd day, but a good one and I couldn't really get a real idea of what school was going to be like till the next Monday when it started properly. Unfortunately, however, that was not possible as Monday-Wednesday there was no school because the whole country was on hurricane alert, so I only ended up having two days of school that week. It was odd, because for a lot of the time I barely understood what the teacher is saying, for a lot of the subjects I just copy from the person I'm sitting next to in that lesson, which is kind of difficult as well sometimes because it turns out everyone here writes in really fancy loopy writing that I can barely read!
There are, however, a few subjects that I've found don't pose as much of a problem, those being Biology, Math, French and (as expected) English. I'm alright at all of those, mainly because I have already studied the subjects we're doing in Biology and Math, so when it comes to simultaneous equations I'm actually the best in the class, if I do say so myself. I can't boast the same for biology, however we're currently on a topic I already studied in England so I actually understand a fair bit of the work.
In relation to that, however, I have discovered that I understand written Spanish more than spoken Spanish, and I can understand spoken Spanish more than I can speak Spanish, so understanding of the language is improving and I'm doing fine with that, what I'm having most problems with at the moment is communicating the way I want to, and saying the things I want to say. Another aspect that I'm having trouble with in regards to speaking Spanish is tenses, oh my lord I really do suck at tenses!! I expect I'll get better at it with time, but to be honest the main part of it is trying to remember which form of which word I use for which person and I've always been terrible at remembering things like that; we all have the areas we don't quite excel in.
I'm going to leave you with this for now, because the weekend after my first proper days of school was fairly long and I want to be able to talk about it in full. The picture for this post is one taken at orientation, because I don't really have any pictures of my first days at school, and it's probably one of my favourite pictures there is of me!
Till the next time - Jazzy x
