We finally tore ourselves away from Broome, after staying in the region for almost 4 weeks. Like we've said previously, its great to be back at the beach.
Still travelling with Lisa, Steve and Torah, our first stop was 80 Mile Beach, where we spent a couple of days - the boys fishing, and the girls looking at shells and for nesting turtles. Unfortunately our timing was out for the latter, although we saw quite a few fresh tracks, and other people in the caravan park were lucky enough to witness the nesting.
Brief overnight stop in Port Hedland, where we saw some massive ore trains, mountainous stockpiles of evaporative salt, and huge boats being loaded at the port (a bit too much like work for Lee though).
From Port Hedland we all headed inland to Karijini National Park. We'd been hearing stories about what a spectacular place it is, and it certainly didn't disappoint. The only trouble with travelling at this time of year is the heat - you don't really feel like going for 10km hikes down into (and therefore back up out of) gorges in 40 degrees. Luckily at Karijini, you can drive to pretty much all of the gorges, and a short walk at each will find you at the edge of a sheer cliff, peering down into the depths, and getting tingly feet from the size of the drop. They were some of the most impressive that we've seen on the trip so far, our favourite being Hammersley Gorge (one of the ones we actually walked down into, only because it was a short walk!).
We also had a stay in Tom Price, a town pretty much based around the Rio Tinto mine of the same name. Although we didn't do the mine tour on offer, we did get a birdseye view of the operation from the nearby Mount Nameless. If they had've consulted us, we would have named it Mount Rather Steep and Rocky but Well Worth It for the Vista.
After our inland adventure, it was time to trek back to the coast. We had to say goodbye to Steve, Lisa & Torah as they needed to make tracks, their time on the road was running out, so they headed southwest, while we headed northwest, back to the beach.
