We're ashamed to admit it, but the first thing we did when we arrived in Geraldton was have McDonalds! It had been so long... After an unhealthy start, we checked out the town, freaked out about the traffic lights for a little bit, and then set up camp at Sunset Beach.
Did the usual touristy stuff - checked out the museum and learnt about the rather gruesome history of the wreck of the Batavia back in the 1600's, just off the coast on the Abrolhos Islands. We also visited the memorial to the HMAS Sydney, which sank off the west coast, leaving no trace of the boat or the 645 crew who were lost. Coincidentally, we saw in the news the other day that they've just launched a mission to find the wreck.
We took a day trip down to the historic town of Greenough, famous for its "leaning trees". The winds are so strong in these parts that it makes the trees grow parallel to the ground. (And you thought we were just whingeing about the wind...) We also visited a lovely olive grove, and a woodworks studio where they make things out of recycled timber - it was a very good day for Lea.
On the fishing front, we've had no luck here in Geraldton, there is too much seaweed around at the moment. Maybe we'll have better luck further south.
