After the many horror stories we heard at the van park in Kununurra about this little dirt track, we were finally hit the Gibb River Road. Only a short drive to El Questro, some 50kms of rocky, corrugated road we arrived to discover a puncture in the back right tyre, and it rapidly deflating. Tried to plug it but the rip was a little big, thought we'd better change over the other rear tyre as well, as the tread was looking a little depleted. And lucky we did as there was a screw in that rear tyre. So far, the Gibb was living up to expectations.
We were assigned our private camp site that was basically a cleared area right next to a river. As Lee found out later, the river had about half a dozen or so very cluey barra living in it. The spot was magic with a view you would expect to pay big bucks for. He tried for days to temp the cunning fish with only a few takes but no hook ups, but he did manage to get a tarpon on a soft plastic though.
El Questro is a working cattle station which also is a Wilderness Park that seems to see quite a few tourists come through, bus loads would turn over each day, however we would rarely see them as the property is a million acres or so. The 4wd tracks and many gorges just on this property could keep you busy for weeks, and being part of the Voyages chain of resort-type things it was very well set up.
We decided to back track to Kununurra for one more tyre to complete the set, meaning 4 new matching tyres to face the Gibb with once again.
