We slept in on our first morning in WA, or so we thought until we looked at our watch - it was only 6.30am! The time zone change has certainly had an impact on us. Leaving Kununurra, we'd packed up and were on the road by 8.30am, absolutely unheard of for us!
We headed south to Purnululu (aka Bungle Bungles), and after travelling on a rather bumpy road, which took us over 2 hours to go 50km, we arrived. We grabbed a campsite, and we were half-way through setting up when Lee spotted a 6 foot king brown snake right near us, in the long grass. Lea demanded that we move further away from the long grass to give us a bit of a clearing, in case the snake wanted to visit us again. The neighbouring campers wondered what the hell we were doing unpacking then repacking then unpacking again, until we explained it to them later.
After a chilly night, we were up with the sun and off to do our first bushwalk through the beehive formations that Purnululu is famous for. It certainly didn't disappoint - it was awesome. We hiked along the dry bed of Piccaninny Creek, which wound through the massive domes. Next we walked along the narrow 200+m deep Cathedral Gorge, which ended in a huge spherical semi-dome that had been carved out by water. Mind-blowing. We finished the walks in the heat of the day, but it was well worth it. And boy, does it get hot here! Daytime temps can reach 50 degrees, although it only got to 40 degrees for us.
The next day we checked out Echidna Chasm, an equally spectacular formation. It is so narrow in spots that you can easily touch both sides at once. It was lovely and cool in the depths of the chasm, we wanted to stay all day, but we had to face the hairy road out of the park and back to Kununurra, as our next big off-road adventure is looming large - the challenging Gibb River Road.
This will be our last blog for a while, we probably won't have reception until we reach the other end of the Gibb. West coast, here we come!
