After leaving Albany, we spent 2 days getting across to Esperance, staying overnight at a place called Quagi Beach, a little campspot tucked in amongst the dense vegetation along the coastline. We thought we'd scored a non-windy spot, but we were sorely mistaken - the tent flapped mercilessly all night.
Things didn't change much when we reached Esperance. We had a fantastic view from our waterfront campsite, but boy, did it blow a gale. We ended up having to take the awning off the camper as it was acting like a parachute and lifting Deefa26 off the ground! Well, almost.
Had a good time checking out the spectacular coastline in these parts, and the mysterious blowhole - we couldn't see any water spray, but Lea soon discovered (when she sat too close to it) that it blows a mean jet of air, capable of knocking your hat right off your head. Cat-like reflexes on Lee's part stopped the hat blowing right into the Southern Ocean.
Celebrated New Year in a rugged-up fashion, the thermometer showed 17 degrees as we headed into town to watch a couple of local bands ring in 2008.
We packed up on the 2nd and joined our friends Tam, Greg and the rugrats Jake, Elyssa and Sienna out at Cape Le Grand National Park. Their friends Ruth, Brandon and son Jacob were also out there, so it was a bit of a party, especially on the 4th, which turned out to be Greg's birthday. The blokes started the celebrations in the morning by climbing a big hill (Frenchman's Peak), before we all hit the beach for a swim in the crystal clear waters. At night we took over the camp kitchen for a birthday barbie, topped off by a birthday cake that Tam had made in the afternoon. Who says you have to rough it when you're camping?!
The next morning we woke to cloudy and rainy skies, so we packed up and hit the road, next stop the famous Nullarbor.
