Monday;; Day 22! Only 2 hours on the plane and I land in Seville. Despite my best efforts to stay awake on the plane (iPod cranking, lollies and being freezing!), I found my head constantly kept falling as I was losing consciousness! I never actually got to sleep thanks to the jerking of my head every time it fell and nearly landed on the shoulder of the man next to me!, but either way, I'm pretty tired lol but am safe and sound in Seville at 10.10am local time.
At arrivals I know that Eva (the Mum) will be there to greet me with one of those signs people hold up with a name on it in fancy writing...for the important people yeh? So I asked Eva if she would do the same for me so I could identify her (so that I could feel important) hehehe! ...buuut after half an hour or so there is no sign and no Eva. Trying not to worry too much I just lean back against a wall and keep a look out. Where is she? Am I in the wrong place? Is she okay? What should I do? Lol!....Soon she appears in front of me and says 'Chloe?!' :) omg phew! She got stuck at work and running round doing things; that is why she is late. But better late than never hey! Could you imagine? I didn't have a plan B really if for some reason she didn't rock up! I usually don't think like that haha which may not necessarily be a good thing! I guess I would have just caught a train to Mazarron where my Aunty, Uncle and Grandad are! But at this point, I have no internet or SIM card that works in Spain so I would have been a little stuck! And I never got Eva's phone number either as we had communicated via Skype and email! That'll teach me! But hey, in the car we get. It's hot and all I hear is Spanish around me or English is a Spanish accent; I am in heaven!
Spain almost feels comfortable or comforting for me...My family and I have been coming on holiday to different parts of a Spain since I was a toddler and now with my Aunty, Uncle and Grandad living in Spain for the past 9 years or so, it is pretty much like a second home! We celebrated my Grandad's 90th birthday here in Spain last October and on his actual birthday, I got a Spanish tattoo which I had been wanting to get for years; I was just waiting for the right moment :) I figured being in Spain and on my Grandad's 90th was as good as it was going to get!
From the airport to home, we talk in English and in a way like we have known each other for years already! I feel very comfortable with her and I notice my accent is already starting to sound Spanish haha! Whenever I go, my accent changes like a chameleon; I don't think I control it, it just kind of happens!
Once we arrive at the family apartment (more like a big house on one level), we go inside straight away as it is very hot outside. Eva offers to give me some food and then says to get some sleep. At this point it is about 11.30am and Eva tells me how in the school holidays i.e. now, the children sleep in late and go to bed late. So as I'm going to my room, two of the four children wake up and come and greet me! What a lovely surprise!!!..They are so sweet and beautiful. Jaime (pronounced 'Hi-meh' is 13 and Patricia (pronounced 'Patrithia') is 8. The other two are away on summer camp at the moment; Alejandra (pronounced 'Alehandra') is 10, nearly 11, and Alvero is 15! Yes, that's right, 4 children!!! Lucky I love children so much...It is good though that I am only meeting 2 now so I can get to know them better before the other 2 join us instead of all at once! Once I have said hello to Jaime and Patricia, their Dad gets home and comes to greet me too. His name is Enrique (or Ki-Ki as his nickname) and there are lots of kisses exchanged as you always kiss twice; once on each cheek for whenever you meet someone or say goodbye. Unusual for places like England and Australia but fortunately I am used to it from being around a Greek family for 5 years and to be honest, I quite like it!
Anyway, I say that I will only have an hour or 2 sleep so I don't ruin my sleeping pattern but she says 'see how you go!' ..Well, when I wake up, I can not believe it is nearly 6.30pm!!! My god!!! I rush out to the kitchen but they assure me it's fine!..I needed the sleep I think!!
We talk about everything including the Brasil vs Germany came that will be playing tonight at 10pm and it hits me that I am here, in Spain, with a complete family of strangers and nothing but Spanish culture around me. It is a little overwhelming and a shock, but at the same time exciting and warming. It's a good job that I know a little bit of Spanish already but I definitely need to know a lot more!!...Puedo hablar un poco de español!
Eva, Patricia and I head to the supermarket (supermacado!) to do a huge shop of all foods and things we will cook for the week. She asks me what I like to cook as well as what I like to eat. They are very traditional; cooking everything from scratch; no fast food, no pre-made or half-made; just all from scratch! I love it! It's fun being together in the supermarket but again a shock with all the Spanish and zero English apart from Eva talking to me!
We end up eating dinner at 11pm; normal for this side of the world but weird for me to get used to at this point; in between watching Germany absolutely thrash Brasil. My Spanish family are very happy with the result!!! (7-1 to Germany). It is very much a boys household! Football football football :) and the women in the kitchen! I love it though; everyone is happy and I already feel welcomed in as a part of the family...
My main role will be to teach the children English; helping them improve on what they already know; as well as playing with them, cooking for them, reading with them and taking care of them. It is something that for-fills me and I am devoting my time and energy into these children and this family for the months that I will be with them. I feel so privelidged to have been given this opportunity, so lucky to have even received it, and so happy as this will be a part of my journey as a traveler :)
I finally get to bed, very late and still very hot, and say thank you for the start of a great opportunity opening up for me, and good night to my first day here. Buenas noches amigos :)
