Woke up this morning to find quite a few back packers had also pulled into the rest stop during the night. We drank a coffee but decided to stop for breakfast on the way. The journey today would only take about 2.5 hours to reach Exmouth.
Our campsite last night was only a few meters from the turn off to the Exmouth Peninsula, and we began to realise how isolated this area is - it's a long way from main towns Carnarvon in the south and Karratha in the north. This is also reflected along the way in the price of fuel - and we would find out once in Exmouth, the price of everything, including groceries, is sky high.
The landscape along the way was flat and low lying, with very little of interest to look at. We stopped at a roadside stop called Termite Nests to have a close look at the enormous red structures that have seen dotted along the Pilbara plains.
We continued driving and stopped again to make breakfast on the beach, where local fishermen were trying their luck.
Then we headed into Exmouth, stopping first at the visitor centre, before arriving at the caravan park we have booked into for the next three nights. There are no free or low cost camping areas anywhere in this area.
After setting up we headed out to see Charles Knife Canyon Drive within the Cape Range National Park, where you can drive up along a winding dirt road track along a narrow ridge between two impressive canyons. At the bottom of one side of the canyon you can see the dry Shot Hole Creek snaking its way through the gorge.
From the lookout at the top of the ridge you are rewarded with a view across the canyons, with the plains and the Exmouth Gulf as a backdrop.
There are several stopping points on the track as well as some lengthy walking trails. There is also the remains of the historic Wapet (West Australian Petroleum) Oil Well No. 3 in the region, a reminder of the region's oil exploration history from the 1950s.
In the evening we headed out to enjoy a meal at the local Pot Shot Hotel, sitting on the deck by the pool before heading back to our little home on wheels.
Good night xx
