We left Ellendale Pool this morning in much grayer and windier weather conditions than we had yesterday. In fact, I finally felt it time today to get out my bag of winter clothes from the boot of the car as we are headed for colder weather now that we are out of the Pilbara and heading back to Perth. We backtracked slightly towards Geraldton as we wanted to visit the historic town of Greenough, now preserved as a national trust town, with restored and furnished buildings from the late 1800s including both Catholic and Presbyterian Churches, Gaol, school, community hall, various cottages and accommodation for the priest and resident sisters.
After exploring the historic precinct we enjoyed a Devonshire coffee and then drove a little further north to see the leaning tree, a massive tree that leans so far over that its trunk and branches hug the ground. There are a number of these trees in this part of WA due to the strong winds that prevail in these parts.
Mid afternoon we pulled in to the nearby Flat Rocks beach at Greenough, where we decided to spend the night. We initially pulled up behind the toilet block with a view over the parking bay to the ocean and surf, where we ate a late lunch before moving the caravan so that we were parked alongside the edge of the bay with a totally private view directly over the flat rocks, sandy beach and wild surf. I spent the afternoon soaking up the view from the lounge window as I read through some magazines, while Gadi played with the TV antenna in the hope of being able to get TV reception.
After chatting to some other campers we hurried inside our little home on wheels to warm up, prepare dinner and settle in for the evening. For some reason, despite earlier efforts not proving successful, TV reception magically appeared just in time for The 7.30 Report and the rest of the usual ABC Monday night line up.
Tomorrow we will continue our slow crawl south. Meanwhile, tonight we will fall asleep to the sound of the pounding waves roaring only a couple of metres from our caravan.
Night night, sweet dreams xx
