Today was a day for seeing rather odd tourist attractions!
We left our campsite this morning and headed first into the tiny town of Shackleton, known for having the tiniest bank in WA (open only for an hour and a half each week) and a local resident who has created a rather novel garden filled with creative statues made out of recycled materials.
Next stop was Bruce Rock and a quick stop in town before heading to Corrigan where we drove to a lookout to eat lunch before visiting a cemetery for pets in town where we walked around the grave sites with their epitaphs and odes to much loved pets. Cadbury walked with us and he found it hard to leave all the stuffed toys on the grave sites. We had to call him repeatedly to get in the car.
Mid afternoon we headed to Kulin where we drove out on the Tin Horse Highway to see the town's claim to fame - a highway lined with colourful and creative tin horse statues, each a different or whacky theme. My favourite was the police car with the stop sign. The horses were created as a clever and fun way to promote the annual Kulin horse races each October.
We enjoyed checking out all the statues but we did wonder how distracting it is to have such a tourist attraction out on the highway stretching over a few kilometers on both sides of the road as you have cars, buses and caravans slowing down and stopping to take photos every few metres.
We spent the night at the free camp in the centre of town, with amenities including clean toilets, a dump point and free hot showers. This is a town that really values its travellers and I am sure that those who stay repay the generosity by spending money at various local businesses.
Anyway, time to say good night xx
