Woke up this morning to find we were the only people camped on the edge of the cliff. All the other caravans had moved on by 7.30am. Great feeling to be alone on the edge of the cliff to enjoy the remoteness and the sunshine. Made pancakes for brekky so we can use up the last of our fruit before crossing the border.
Headed off around 11.30 and enjoyed the surrounding Nullarbor. It certainly wasn't the 'nothing' that you hear about. And it's greener than you think. Or at least it is green at the moment. There are shrubs and the occasional small trees to break up the landscape. Through the Wikicamps app we can see POIs on the road, including some hilarious trees that people are marking, probably out of boredom, where you can add your own item to the others already hanging up. There's the shoe tree, hat tree, teacup tree and bra tree. We thought of starting a tree, a money tree, just to see how long that would last!!
The excitement of today was crossing from South Australia to Western Australia at Border Village, where we stopped first to prepare some salads with dressing (as you are then allowed to take them through), eat the last of the carrots and celery, and empty our toilet at the dump point.
We then crossed through the quarantine point with little drama, although we did have to open our fridges (in the caravan and car) and several cupboards in the van. The guy wanted to know where all our beer was - obviously most people carry a lot of grog!
Excitingly for us, as we crossed into WA we gained one and a half hours in time, meaning we were making quite good time today.
We stopped for a break and some lunch at Mundrabilla roadhouse and then continued our journey. The landscape in WA seemed different, even greener on some parts and we even passed through a forest of trees at one point. For the entire afternoon we drove alongside a treed escarpment just to the north of us that provided some interest to the landscape. The worst part about driving today was how many dead kangaroos and feasting crows we saw along the road - worse even than we've seen in Tasmania.
We kept driving until the sun seemed to get lower and lower in the sky but we were confused as to the time as our phones were showing different times. Decided to stop for the night just before the Caiguna Roadhouse so we can fill fuel in the morning and not have to drive in the dark. The rest stop we chose, Jillbunya Rockhole, was great as we could drive far back off the road, past a few caravans, to a spot totally on our own in the bush. We enjoyed the last rays of the sun and a lovely sunset, before sitting down to an early (considering the time change) easy dinner of cheese and crackers and leftovers followed by toasted chocolate wraps for dessert - yum!
Watched the last few episodes of Glitch from our hard drive - quite a weird Australian ABC production about dead people coming to life in a small country town in Victoria. Now that's finished we can move on to something else.
Time for a hot shower and to jump into bed.
Good night from the Nullarbor xx
