Sunday night I think I skyped my family, unpacked, did some homework and went to bed.
Mondays are my busy days. I have class from 9-10 and then from 12-5. During my break katy, sara, and I went to the box office and bought tickets for the opera for Wednesday night. Then katy and I went for coffee near domus. I went back to the apartment, ate lunch, and went back to class. Photography was interesting, but it's a little slow because right now she's showing us the basics, and history of Christianity was cool too. Then I did some homework, and made eggs and spinach for myself. We were all planning on going out, but Alex didn't feel well, and Sara and Carson decided they didn't want to. But that was okay cause Katy and I went out. Katy had met these girls from England, and we met them at Merlin. We had a blast. I was nice just going out in a small crowd and getting to talk to new people, of course Valentino and Michael were there…they always are.I went home at 1, katy stayed out.
Tuesday I had a break from 10-3:30…as I do everyday but Monday. So after Italian, I did some laundry, mailed my postcards, and walked around with Katy and Kelley. We did some reading on the steps, because it is warmer outside than it is in our apartment! Yea these stone and brick walls are nice…but there's no insulation! I would also like to inform you, that heat is not turned on until November 1st, and we only get it for 7 hours a day…and cannot turn it on at night. So we sat in the sun and read. I had some lunch, did more homework, and went to my other two classes. After Food and Culture and American Foreign Policy, I ran home to make eggs and spinach, scoffed it down, and katy, Kelley, and I met Zach at the fountain. Zach is an American who now lives here and works or umbra. He runs little tutorials about Italy. He taught us about apertivo awhile back, and this information session was about coffee…so I was stoked. Afterward, Katy was hungry and wanted a hamburger, so the three of us went to Shamrock. So we sat in Shamrock, an Irish pub in Italy, watching soccer and drinking a beer, it was very confusing culturally. We walked back home, did some homework, and went out. Alex wasn't feeling well still, so stayed home. The girls wanted to go to merlin. Merlin sometimes has a dating night, where everyone gets a number and you can write note to someone, put their number on it, and the waitress will deliver it anonomously. This was one of those nights. We had been once before and didn't find it thrilling so Katy, Kelley and I went to La'Tana, another student abroad hangout bar. There was practically no one there, but we didn't care. We got a drink and watched the excerpts of the soccer games, like the best and worst of this weeks soccer. We toasted to it being October AND our official first month together, at midnight. Then we met the girls back at merlin, hung out for awhile, and went home to bed.
Wednesday, during my break, I did more laundry, and sat out on the steps with katy and alex this time to do some homework. Because I have a break in the middle of the day, I do my homework that is due at 3:30 in the afternoon before the class…im sure you were all wondering. It was SO nice outside that alex and I got some gelato from sweet sweet way. We also met a girl from germany who is studying abroad here, hopefully we'll meet up with her again sometime. After my class, I came home at 5, did some emailing. I also looked up soccer teams. The night before, katy, Kelley, and I decided that we would each choose a team and watch as many games as we could. That way we would learn more about soccer, have an excuse to get out of the apartment, and learn how to fight each other in Italian. So after class I did some research and have chosen Juventus! After a bit of homework, we got ready for dinner and the opera. We wanted to go to a fancy meal, but people got out of class at 6:45, and the opera started at 8:30…and in Italy dinner takes longer than an hour. So we just went to Quattro Passi. Gennaro gave us a free nutella pizza afterwords…it is so deadly. The opera that night was Cinderella. The theater was beautiful! We sat in our own little box three levels up. Italian is hard enough to understand when they speak it at a regular pace, let along when they speak quickly like they do in operas. Also, all the words here end in vowels, and when the performers stretched every note…it was very difficult to tell when a word began and ended. I was happy I understood 5 words. Karole, Kelley, and Carson left at intermission, but Katy, Sara, Alex and I stayed. And im glad we did. It was not your typical Cinderella story. First of all, the evil stepmother was just the father, the fairy godmother was a godfather, and there were no singing mice or glass slippers. the story went that the prince was coming. The evil father wanted one of his 2 loving daughters to marry him so he would be rich. Turns out the guy they thought was the prince was a decoy, and was gay (remember this is all in Italian, so it was visually evident that this is what was going on), and the real prince, who had been there the whole time acting as the prince's friend, was smitten for cinerella because he had seen her true heart, and in the end they got married. So theres the Italian version of the 3 hour opera summed up. Also, it was interesting that there were 3 men dressed at women in the choir. The whole opera was a cast of 20 people, and the music was lovely. We were so tired afterward, that we went straight to bed.
Today is Thursday. After Italian, sara and I bought re-writable dvds or photo and did a little grocery shopping. I just made my outline for my food and culture paper about why America has such bad eating habits, uploaded some photos, and cleaned the house because sara's parents are coming today! They are taking us out to dinner later tonight…and we might go out after I guess.
Tomorrow I am headed to the Amalfi Coast to meet Jeff, Jackie, and some other people. THeres supposed to be 6 of us in one room…that should be interesting. And hopefully I'll make it to Capri and.or Pompeii…I'm thinking Capri. So that's all for now until Sunday!
