It's only a month in and I am already slacking on this blog business. Today is Tuesday? Sure. When did I write last? Let me check. Wow, the 2nd… I am really slacking. Let's say I'll blog at least once a week? K, glad we agreed.
SSOOO I went to Sorrento. Actually, we stayed in a town, St. Agnello, outside of Sorrento. I left at 7:30am by myself from my apartment. I trained from Perugia to Rome, Rome to Naples. Yes, I traveled to Naples by myself (and back!) and live to tell about it. This was one of those things I didn't tell mom until AFTER. It was totally out of character that I just hoped on a train not knowing my final destination. I called Jackie and she gave me step by step directions. From Naples, I got on what we call the sketch train, the circumversuviana, to Sorrento. Jackie still hadn't told me the name of the hotel, so I had no idea where I was going. This is what I get for "planning" with Jackie. Haha but I love her. So I got into Sorrento and called her. She told me they were in Capri and to get on a ferry to Capri. I carried my three bags, took a ferry, and then a tram, all the way up to the top of the beautiful island of Capri…at 5:30. It took me 10 hours to get there. 10. I was so excited to be IN CAPRI and with good friends that I could just relax and be myself around. I ordered un caffé and Jeff, Jackie, and I chatted and caught up. They then informed me that the last ferry out from Capri was at 7. So we talked, took some pictures, and walked down. From Sorrento we walked to a grocery store and bought dinner. I guess the hotel Jackie was staying in had a kitchen. So we bought sausage, peppers, pasta, and sauce…and zucchini, onions, and more peppers…and lettuce, tomatoes, and wine. We brought it all backed and they cooked while I took a nice hot shower. What good friends! After dinner, Jeff, Jackie, and I took a night walk trying to find a beach. Well, we didn't but it was nice to walk around. There were 4 other people staying in the hotel, so 7 of us total, and the room was enough for 5. So I got the floor, but im not complaining, cause I was a guest and just staying with them. The thunder was SO loud that night that I woke up.
In the morning, the roommates had gone to breakfast and I…I don't know what I did while I waited for jeff to wake up. They came back at like 10:30, jeff FINALLY woke up, and we had some rolls and jelly that Jackie stole for us. He showered and the three of us went to pompei. The people in Sorrento were a little surprised at my Italian. I guess they just figure that Americans are going to speak English. The woman at the café we went to questioned me several times about the caffé macchiato that I ordered, telling me it was espresso.
We took the cirucumversuviana to pompei. We were a little nervous because it kept off and on raining and we didn't have jackets or umbrellas…but we didn't care all that much. They are so great to travel with. In pompei, we wanted to go up mount Vesuvius. But the guy at the info station said he didn't know if it was open or not due to the weather. Because we didn't want to train up and find out, we decided that touring the ruins would be sufficient. we stopped to look at some vendors. One of who gave Jackie and I free postcards because we looked like beautiful Italian women and because we spoke Italian to him. He then tried to get me to buy Venetian glass earrings that I liked, but I decided if I really liked them I would buy them IN Venice. We bought our ticket into the ruins. We were about 7 minutes in when it started hailing. We stood against a wall as to not be impaled by the hail. After it stopped, there was a beautiful rainbow, and it started thundering. So we ran out, taking pictures as we went, and got on the train back to Sorrento. We bought a lot of candy and ate it in the apartment while watching Italian tv…I may have taken a little nap. Then the roommates came back and we all went out to dinner. I decided that because I wasn't paying for a hotel, that I could splurge on dinner. I have prosciutto e meloné, baked mussels in a garlic butter sauce, and chocolate almond cake. Wow. Jeff, Jackie, Jen (jackie's really nice roommate) and I all wanted to do some exploring. So the others left to go back to the hotel, and we walked around Sorrento at night. We saw some people from stonehill, did some window shopping, and wound up having coffee at a little café at 11pm.
The next morning I woke up at 9, packed up, and left. I went to a café and tried to order a sfoligate (the pastries we get from the northend guys…that's how you spell them). But he gave me a croissant filled with chocolate. I didn't want to miss my train, so of course I just took it and ate it. Once I got into naples, I bought my train ticket. I should have gotten lunch, but because I was still in southern Italy, I tried to get another sfoligate…and was successful this time at the train station. So I stood there and had my cappuchino and sfoliagte! The train from Naples to Arezzo was so long, and then I trained to Perugia. Getting home was so nice.
Monday I had lots of classes. During my 2 hour break katy was my model and I took pictures of her in my pashmina for photo class. Then we went to the little coop (grocery store) and I had lunch. At night, we went to Merlin for Indian night.
Today was Tuesday. During my break I did LOTS of homework and took a nap. I also got an espresso with Kelley and alex between my afternoon classes. I made myself a beautiful dinner and have been straightening my life out all night (booking trips, checking train schedules, eating chocolate…you know the deal).
So, that's all for now folks!
