December 1, 2008
Monday, November 24, I think I went to class and then the girls and I went out to dinner. The place was really neat. It was all brick (like all the buildings around here) and it had gnomes, dragons, and metal armor everywhere…medieval almost. I got roast beef and veggies…delish. Tuesday I don't think anything major happened. Wednesday…Christina and Daniel came!
So Wednesday I woke up early, showered, ate breakfast all with a smile on my face. In class, giuliano had us write our composition that was due Thursday so that we wouldn't have to do it for homework. Afterward, I went home, cleaned the house and paced until 12:30… I nearly drove Sara crazy. Then I took the mini-metro to the train station, where I was supposed to meet Christina and Daniel at 1. Note the: I was supposed to. The first train from Foligno my heart was racing as I was looking at EVERYONE coming off the train, and walked up and down it when they didn't get off. So they didn't get off the first train. …or the second. …or the third. And that's when the elayne in me started to panic. So I started pacing around the train station. And then my phone rang. Daniel informed me that their flight was delayed..and then they got off at the wrong stop. So I asked if they could get a taxi and meet me at the Perugia train station. So I waited outside in the cold. And I waited, and I waited and I waited. And I needed to pee…but I still waited, and then some more. EVERY taxi that came by must have thought I was on drugs because I was either staring into the empty taxi or at the older men getting out of them. So then I got a phonecall from Daniel saying that they were on track 1. …track 1? It didn't matter, I went running. So apparently they couldn't find a taxi and a random woman drove them to the mini-metro and told them how to get to the station. Whatever, they were there and they were safe. And hungry. So we went to my apartment where Kelley was watching and basting the turkey(! Yes we will get to that later) and dropped their luggage off. I took them to happy pizza for some food. Then we checked them into Hotel Umbria and went for coffee at Caffé Morlacchi. They tried hot chocolate, a café latte and a café macchiato. The music was especially loud. Then we went back to the apartment and nursed the turkey and sipped some wine. Soon after, all my roommates came home. The 8 of us, Christina and Daniel included, made a turkey without a meat thermometer…or those blue things that pop up when the turkey is done, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, string beans, carrots, and lots of wine. So it was katy, Kelley, sara, alex, carson, Daniel, Christina, karole, Nathan, my friend mac from Italian class, and myself all for thanksgiving dinner. It was glorious! We burned Christmas candles and ate till we were stuffed. And then had cookies and ice cream. After dinner, stuffed as we were, most of us went to Merlin for the night and saw some of the guys.
Thursday morning, I went to class and then met chris and Daniel at the hotel, where they were still getting ready at 10am. So they checked out and moved their stuff into my apartment. Sara, alex, and Kelley had left for sicily at 6am that morning and said that Christina and Daniel could sleep in their beds Thursday night. So then I took them to blue light special (that's OUR name for it…not the Italian name) for pastries. And then to Bar Duomo because that's where they have the best coffee according to me, Kelley and katy. We go there pretty much every morning. The older gentleman there was BEAMING to see Daniel, Christina and I walk in. I introduced them in Italian to him, and he practically leapt over the counter to shake their hands. We each got a cappuccino with a smiley face sprinkled on top. We told katy to meet us at bar duomo, but she didn't get there in time. Katy runs on katy time. So we headed to piazza italia. There was a ferris wheel there that the three of us got on to look over the edge of perguia. It was beautiful! So they took some pics and saw some men in caps walking and pigeons, you know. Katy was going to meet us there too…but we got tired of waiting, so we told her to meet us at Lavazza, a coffee chain shop in Italy. We got some specialty drinks. Katy said she would meet us there too. But by the time we finished drinks and got out the door, she still wasn't there. So we went to a small restaurant and got torta al testo, a special bread only found in the Umbrian region. Katy finally caught up with us when we were on the steps eating our torta al testo. We all decided to go to lunch, I just got a caprese salad (that's tomatoes, basil and mozzarella). After lunch, we walked around to Stranieri, the international university in perugia where there were some pretty views. After, we just happened to be near Augusta Perugia, the best gelateria in Perugia. But because it was cold we just got some hot chocolate…seeing as it's a cicciolateria too. Then we walked up the annoying stairs and took a nap in my apartment. When we woke up around 4, we went to sweet sweet way, the cicciolateria and then the COOP (grocery store) and bought dinner. Once we had put the perishable items in the fridge, went to apertivo at Cinastik. They each got a campari and I got a white wine…Daniel and I eventually switched because he didn't like the bitter campari. There we chatted till 8pm. Back at the apartment, I prepared dinner while they skyped the fams. I made bruscetta, a salad, and bowties with red sauce for Daniel, and with zucchini, chicken and a cream sauce for chris and I. we had some wine and called it an easy evening.
Friday morning we woke up at 6:30am to catch the bus to Florence with katy and carson who were going on a field trip. The bus took us to the train station and from there we walked to Archi Rossi. We stored our bags and went for coffee. Then we went shopping. And we shopped and we shopped and we shopped. And then we stopped for pizza and biscotti with sweet wine. And then we shopped more. We unloaded at the hostel, took a shower and a short nap, and shopped some more! Then we got some drinks at Astor and at 8 went to dinner. Our waiter was very nice and asked what we were doing later, we said we might see him around. But we went back to the hostel to change and then went to Astor because the bartender was so nice to us. Brendan Rauth met us there…as did our waiter… so we had a few drinks and then went to another bar for the rest of the night. At 4 we got home. I told Brendan we would take him out to lunch the next day to repay him.
So on Saturday we woke up at 8, showered, ate breakfast and stored our luggage at the hostel. We saw the David, had some coffee, and went to the Duomo. After we scaled the Duomo, we met Brendan in front of Ghiberti's doors. We walked across the Ponte Vecchio to a really nice lunch. I got almonds with jam and gorgonzola and then gnocci with mushrooms. Brendan still paid for his own lunch, so maybe I'll take him out for coffee when we get back to Stonehill. Then we went to Grom for gelato, said bye to Brendan and did some last minute shopping. At 4, we got on out first of three trains to rome. After the three trains we took a bus, got a little lost, and eventually wound up at the Litus Roma hostel. I am sorry to say that we ate at a Spanish restaurant because it was the closest thing to the hostel and we were starving. We were all tired from traveling…especially Daniel, and called it a night.
Sunday, we woke up early, had breakfast at the hostel and walked to the bus station. We took two buses to the airport. I checked them in, had lunch with them, and then got on a train home. Not much happened last night, so I just went to bed after I finished my paper.
Today I had a lot of class, and it was my LAST Monday. This is because next Monday is an Italian holiday, so there are no classes and then its finals. I can't believe they are so soon! Tonight we are going out for Pietro's birthday. It should be fun. And then the rest of week I am writing my other 8 page paper due Thursday. And Thursday night, I leave for Paris!!
So until then, Angela
