Its Wednesday October 15th. I haven't written in a week. So last Wednesday I probably went to class, between my classes I might have done some homework, gotten coffee, grocery shopped? Who knows.Carson made gnocchi for dinner because we all had an italian mid term the next day, so we stayed in.
Thursday was interesting. Katy was filmed by a guy at Umbra for a "day in the life of an Umbra student" so we were taped coming out of our apartment, going to class, buying coffee, and he was supposed to film fam dinner night but he forgot the camera. It was nice, his roommate cooked for us and then some of us went out that night. I had my italian mid term that day.
On Friday, katy, Kelley, karole, emma (a British girl we've befriended), and I left at 9 for Milano. I was very tired, and slept the entire 5 hours there. As we were getting off in Milan, Kelley asked me the address of the hotel and how to get there from the train station. I had booked it, so it was my responsibility…and I had forgotten to. Sssooo we made a pit stop at an internet café to figure out where we were and where we had to go, it wasn't too bad all in all. We got in, freshened up, and explored Milan. It is beautiful, you need to go. We quickly stopped at a café where I had a much needed caffe' macchiato doppio (that's 2 espressos with foamed milk) and a canoli. I didn't realize how much I missed city life until I got there. All these wide streets, cars, pollution, it was great. They had a huge cathedral that was magnificent amongst all the high end shopping. We found streets upon streets of Gucci, hugo boss, chanel, Louis vitton, prada….the list goes on, I didn't even recognize half the designers. The streets were lit and no cars were permitted down them. The people walking the streets were fantastic as well, walking around in their high end clothing. Eventually we got hungry and happened upon an Indian restaurant. We were so excited to eat something other than Italian food, not that I don't love it. Afterward, we walked around a bit more, and went to bed. Katy and I roomed together
Saturday morning we all met at 9 in the common room. Then we were off to see the cathedral. As we walked there, we made sure to rub our heel on the bull for good luck in the enclosed shopping area. At the cathedral, there was a service going on when we went in, so it was like I went to church (happy mom and dad?). We walked up to the roof of it. It was breathtaking, all white marble with intricate sculptures. By the time we got through the entire cathedral, and took pictures by the lion statue, and escaped from the men tying bracelets to our wrists and making us pay for them (which none of us got conned into), we were ready for lunch. We walked away from the center because it was very expensive. We found a little place…and guess what I found. Penne alla graniata con prosciutto e piscelli. Yes, that is penne in a cream sauce with ham and peas. It was delicious, but still not as good as dads. All the girls were jealous of my dish and was like…that's because I know what's up and what food is good because my family is awesome and makes the good stuff. Then we may have gotten some pineapple and mango gelato…and gone shopping? What else is there to do in Milano? So we shopped, and shopped, and shopped. And then tried to go into the scala, the big theater there, but it wasn't open. So, we did some more shopping? Opps. After all that money spending, we needed a nap. So we did. Karole and emma had left for Perugia, so katy, Kelley, and I napped and went for an aperitivo. Aperitivo is when you go out for some drinks to open your stomach, and there are some snacks served along with it. We had learned in our food and culture class (see there's a reason I'm taking this class) that aperitivo originated in milano, and was best there. So we had a drink each, and it came with bruschettas, chips, nuts, and even pasta. We had contacted Mauro's brother, who lives in Milan and planned to meet up with him and his friends for pizza. Mauro is our friend who works at the school and helps us out. The three of us met the 6 of them at the metro and tried to find a pizzeria. It took us three hours, walking, to find a place that would seat 9. We ate at 11:30pm. After, we were so tired, we just went to bed. P.A.(Mauro's brother) and his friends were very nice, and might come to Perugia soon.
Sunday we woke up at 7(!) to shower and head out…to VENICE! Oh my goodness, its pretty. And there's a lot of tourists. But we walked forever with our luggage and saw the main piazza. I bought lots of venezian glass and haven't decided who it's going to yet (yes I will be accepting bribes). We had lunch at a little place. I got seafood risotto, delicious! We decided we didn't want to walk the 45minutes back, so we took a water taxi! Around 4 we got back on the train and headed to Perugia. I was a good student and studied the entire way back for my American foreign policy midterm I had on Tuesday. We got home late and went to sleep.
Monday I had my busy day of class. At 7:30 I met the stonehill girls and we went out for pizza. I didn't feel like going home, so I met katy and Kelley at a café and then katy and I went to shamrocks and had a few beers. We saw some kids from our classes and stayed out with them for a bit.
Tuesday, after my Italian class, katy and I went to café morlacchi to study. I have claimed it my nock! We get coffee, and there's music, and I can study for as long as I want there with no distracting computer. I studied from 10-3:30 for American foreign policy. At 3:30 we had a bread tasting session for food and culture, which was interesting. Then I took my AFP midterm and came home. Sara made tuna casserole for dinner for all of us. Then, Katy and I met up with people for Kevin's birthday. We went out to pizza (although we didn't eat) and sat around with them for a long while.
Today, being Wednesday, I again went to Italian, and then to café morlacchi to study for my early Christianity mid term I just took. Wow, what a mid term. A whole 10 questions, I finished in 30 minutes. Tonight katy is making us all polenta and sausages, and maybe we'll go out. Tomorrow we leave for Florence and then SPAIN for our fall break! So I really don't know when I'll blog next, but be sure that that it will tell of adventures.
P.s. I would also like to update you that our room checks have been going well, we've gotten a green card both times and that we finally have a working shower head with hot water. It is fabulous.
Love all around,
Angela
