Thursday I went to Italian, then another class, and took my last mid term. I can't believe we already took midterms, but that's another story. Then we all packed and hoped on a train to Florence (Firenze). While walking to the hostel, katy favollitta found me! She did research in the room across from me this summer…it was exciting to see her. We were tired, and just went to bed.
Friday morning, we got ready and had breakfast at a café nearby. The man there was very nice, and was impressed with our Italian speaking skills. Food in Firenze is definitely more expensive than good ol' Perugia. So then the 6 of us went to the Duomo. It was weird having already seen the duomo a few years ago. This time though, we walked up the tower and took pictures of all of Firenze. While we were walking around, and going into make up stores, we found a department store that sara's parents told her about. They said they had eaten on the roof of the 5 story department store, so we went and had lunch there. We walked around a bit and then got gelato. After, we walked to the ponte vecchio. That was really weird, cause I definitely remember being there twice. We walked along the vendors and took lots of pictures. Sara, alex, and carson went back to the hostel, and Kelly, katy, and I found a vintage store. For dinner, I met Brendan rauth and we went to zaza. It was really good to see a familiar face. I met sara at the duomo, and we went back to the hostel. Sara and I talked on the balcony for like an hour while the girls were at dinner. That night, sara's friends staying in Florence took us out to a bar and discotech. We had a blast!
Saturday morning , October 18th, we found the amazing American breakfast that Florence had to offer! We each got 2 plates of food. Omelets, pancakes, milkshakes, the works. I usually don't crave pancakes besides dads…but these were really good. It was expensive because we bought so much food….but SO worth it! (P.s. best 6 euro I spent so far was on itch cream! There was a mosquito in our hostel and because Christina was not around to attract it…that tiger mosquito bit my 8 times! )So after breakfast, we waddled to the train station, where we went to pisa. We walked through the entire city to the tower, took our tourist pictures, and sat on the green grass. We picked up our bags from the train station where we stored them, and walked to the pisa airport. There, we got on a flight to Barcelona! Once we were in Barcelona, we had to take an hour and a half bus ride to the actual center of the city, to get on the metro, to get to our hostel. Before we got to our hostel, we stopped at a pizza hut for dinner. There was this man with a shaved head in the front and long dreadlocks in the back staring at us from outside the pizza hut. He came in and walked to our table…we got a little jumpy. He asked us if we were staying at mambo tango (the hostel we booked). We didn't want to say yes, because we thought he was trying to follow us or something. He then told us that his name was Toti and he was the owner. Him and Marina, his girlfriend and co-owner, had been waiting for us and wanted to make sure we were okay. At first we thought this was creepy, but we later learned how endearing they are and they just wanted to make sure that we were safe, as we were part of their family. Mambo tango was originally toti and marina's home that they turned into a hostel for backpackers like them. They have all the accommodations and are very helpful. And we felt so comfortable there because as they said, this was their house too. They made the best coffee as well!
