Zagreb welcomed us with a welcome balmy heat.
It feels so good to be back and know where we are going and how to get there. The people are very polite and friendly and always happy to help if needed. Lots of people ride bikes but not on the road, in a special lane painted on the footpath next to the road. It all works very well until we forget and walk in the wrong place! Even then, we are given a grin and a "Hvala " (thank you) as they pass.
Our apartment is situated in an arty neighbourhood of Zagreb with lots of cafés, bars and interesting shops. It's away from the crowds but still within walking distance of the main square. We have been shopping at the fresh produce market near the tram stop around the corner and have been regular visitors at this fabulous deli as well.
The only down side is the six flights of stairs to reach the apartment! But at least we are getting our exercise and I can justify the truffle cheese and other delicacies that I can't resist!
The last few days have been very laid back, visiting our favourite restaurants, enjoying the coffee and sitting outside watching Zagreb go by . Last year we bought strawberries and cherries by the kilo at the market, this year we have been feasting on figs, stone fruit and berries, so sweet and delicious!
Even though it is late August, the weather is in the low thirties in the day and in the high teens at night and we have been told how lucky we are to have missed the recent heat wave... There are a few tourists but the main season is over. I was so looking forward to doing some shopping but all the summer clothes have gone and the winter fashions are in! Looks like I will be travelling light!
Yesterday we went to an exhibition at the Art Pavilion. We asked for two adult tickets at the counter and the girl serving us , looked at us and said
"You are seniors, yes?"
Geoff and I looked at each other and couldn't help laughing! So yes, we received our first seniors discount in Zagreb at an exhibition of Rodin's works ! We won't forget that in a hurry...
Today we are driving to Slavonia, can't wait!
