This past weekend was the ordination of two Ugandan men to the priesthood. It was really neat to be a part of the celebration and see what ordinations are like in Africa. I have been to a hand full of ordinations back home, but none of them were like this.
On Friday, the day before the ordination, there were a lot of people traveling to Kyarusozi and they were staying all over the place. All of the rooms across the street with the Brothers were taken and there were even a couple Brothers that stayed at the convent with us. It was really neat to see how important this ordination was to everyone.
On saturday, we all woke up early and got ready because we wanted to be at the church early so we could get a seat. When we walked outside we were all astonished at the extremely large crowd of people. The field that we play with the kids on was completely covered with coach-style buses and people were everywhere! We walked across the street and to the church and went ahead and found seats for the mass. We waited about an hour or so for the celebration to start, but then it finally did. It was one of the most beautiful celebrations of faith that I have ever witnessed. Everyone was so happy and I could really feel God's presence in the church. I feel like the mass went by fast even though it lasted about three hours. We were all expecting for the festivities to be over after mass ended, however the party was just beginning. Both of the new priests took time to thank the people in their lives who helped them along their journey to the priesthood. And following their speeches there was a reception. Needless to say, it was a very long day, but having the chance to experience an ordination in Uganda is probably something that I will never ever have the chance to do again, and I will always remember it.
