Today was the day that we made our way to Kyarusozi to meet the Sisters who will become our family for the next five and a half weeks! The Sisters' driver Patrick picked us up around 9:00 am and the six of us plus our twelve bags somehow managed to fit into the small "14 passenger" van. We started off our car ride by getting to know Patrick and by jamming to some of his favorite songs. Some of which you all may recognize. I think our two favorites were "Amazing Grace" and "Lord, I lift Your name on high". Over the course of the next five hours or so we passed beautiful valleys and mountains and many small trading centers, drove over countless (by this I mean every 50 feet or so) speed bumps, and made a couple quick pit stops for Patrick (if you know what I mean), and then we were there!!!
We were greeted by all of the Sisters and welcomed in to their home with open arms. They made us all feel right at home from the very start. The Sisters at the Kyarusozi convent are: Sister Mary, Sister Edith, Sister Stella, Sister Pat, and Sister Angel. They are all so sweet and incredible in their own way. Let me tell you a little bit about each one of them.... Sister Mary is seriously like the kindest person I have ever met. She is 83 years old and has been in Uganda for the past 43 years working in the clinic as a midwife. Sister Edith is hilarious!! She hangs out with all of us a lot and even sneaks late night snacks with us. Sister Stella is the principal of the school that Nora, Sarah, and i teach at. She is so sweet and is always good for a laugh. Sister Pat is great too. She really helped me through the first week here when I was super homesick, she talked to me and helped me feel much better. She just arrived in Kyarusozi a couple months before we did, and before that she spent several years in Peru. And last but certainly not least, Sister Angel is a total joy to be around. She is here visiting from Jinja and I don't think there is any way to describe her besides a total angel.
Another major adjustment to life at the convent has been the food….. I honestly never thought I was a picky eater, but I guess Mom just makes the food that I like back home. The first couple days here, I seriously ate pineapple and potatoes at almost every meal, oh and I can't forget the delicious smoky tasting filtered water that we have to drink. I know I probably make the food sound terrible, but honestly I've gotten used to it and it's pretty good now. The fresh fruit and vegetables from the Sisters' garden is absolutely delicious and I know I'll definitely miss it when I return home. My new favorite fruit is passion fruit!!! We tried it for the first time at the Central Inn in Entebbe and it was so funny because we were like what is this? It seriously looked like it was fish eggs or something…. but then we were told how to eat it and I can't even begin to tell you how good it is!! I hope I can find them back home!! Anyway, that's about it as far as life goes at the convent. It's very peaceful and relaxing here, and I could definitely get used to it…. Oh wait!! I already have!!
