For our first weekend in Kyarusozi we went to Fort Portal which is one of the major cities in western Uganda. We were heading there for a going away party for Sister Mary because after spending 43 years serving the people of Uganda she is heading back to the United States and will be at the Mother House at Saint Mary's. On our way there, we first stopped in the city to buy a few things. We went to a store called Maria's to buy some souvineers. This shop was set up by one of the Sisters of the Holy Cross and it helps support the women who make things for the shop. After this stop, we headed to the novitiate house just outside Fort Portal for the party. The property that the house is on is absolutely beautiful. It overlooks the largest crater lake in all of Uganda and there are mountains in the background, it seriously looks like a postcard. We socialized with the novitiates for a while and then had dinner. All of us even had our first ugandan beer, the Nile Special. Now, I normally don't like beer, but this was actually very good. And of course a party would not be complete without a little dancing. So the boom box made an appearance and yes, we danced the night away to many 90's hits including some Backstreet Boys. Overall the party was a success and it was neat to see how much Sister Mary means to everyone here.
