This is more like it ! We arrived in Leon today and have gone from zero's to 5* hero's - luxury by way of San Marco parador.
In the 16th century the building was converted into a monastery but its initial purpose when built in the 12th century was to shelter pilgrims on the road to Santiago. Only right that we return it to it's original use (not sure the monks
ever got planning consent anyway)
Went to mass at the cathedral and then had a 'taste of Leon' lunch in the parador. Being Sunday afternoon a lot of people were in the restaurant with their families, some celebrating special occasions in these regal settings. Aliette and I wandered in wearing flip flops and t-shirts, smelling like 1,000 miles of ****. In addition my chin looks like it has been coated in glue and rolled in metal filings - very pilgrim chic but in a 5* hotel people shy away from me expecting me to offer out a hand and ask for a euro for a cup of tea.
Tomorrow will be different from all the others and yet the same in many respects. Aliette is going to enjoy the hotel until she is physically ejected. A well deserved lie in after 200km of hiking (with blisters) I meanwhile, will attempt to walk around 50km in a day, with my bag, in the heat.
I say 'the same in many respects' as Aliette is being sensible whilst I'm acting like a complete c*ck.
I reckon 50km can be done - a good nights kip, bath, rub my back, talc my crack and I am the Duracell bunny on speed.
.....expect tears tomorrow
