Today we had two decisions to make - do we try and walk 34km in a day or have a relatively short 20km ? Secondly, do we take the most direct route to Carrión de Los Condes or the longer more picturesque route ? As we are not due to arrive in Leon until Sunday the first was easy - why kill ourselves when we have time to take things slightly easier. The second turned out to be a stroke of genius. We decided to take the longer route, avoiding walking nearly all 20km by the roadside. Whilst most fellow peregrinos were melting under the sun we were in shade for the most part of our walk and it makes a huge difference.
For the last 6km we joined the sweaty masses and we quickly became aware that someone had turned up the dial as far as heat was concerned. At midday the temperature was 37C.
Enjoyed probably the best meal so far today at El Resbalon. Didn't look much from outside but inside was 'rugged sophisticate' (Aliette's words not mine !). The brazilians we met on day 2 were just finishing their lunch and both couldn't wait to tell us how good the food was. Paella with rabbit and chicken, lentil soup with chorizo (first plates) followed by cod in tomato sauce. Flan and natilla for pud and a bottle of red. Can't be €10 can it ? Yes it can ! I could get used to this pilgrim lark.
After lunch we had a stroll round town. We decided to go to one of the parish albergues to see if anyone could clean Aliette's blisters (yak) By chance the Albergue we walked into happened to be run by Sisters of Charity - the very same order that run the kids nursery in Tufnell Park. All very random especially when one of the sister knew S.Adela !
( I asked them if they had any beer - they had nun....... sorry...)
Thinking our luck was in given our decisions earlier in the day we took a final gamble. As we arrived into Carrión de Los Condes we were met by a lad who gave us two flyers for Hostel Santiago. Wifi, laundry all free ( they washed all our clothes and returned them by 3pm to hang in the sun ). The gamble came with the room - opted for a four bed room for €25 hoping that no one else would take the other two beds. All was well until 7.30 and then in rolls Asterix and Obelix (mark 2) to share the room. b*****.

Alex Baixas You're making me think about doing the CAMINO next year myself... na! Ask Asterix and Obelix if they're doing a blog. Would be fun to know how they refer to you two :)
