1 word summary of the day: Close
I can't believe that it's almost done! On the trail again at 6:30am to hike over the last 12000+ ft high ridge, then down to Taylor Lake where I could finally get more water. Then another climb up over Kennebec Pass before starting a big downhill section. Of course this being Colorado the thunder started rumbling around 11am and kept up all afternoon:-)
It was nice to do some downhill for a change; cuz it seems that all we ever do is uphill! But even amidst the big down the trail went 1200 ft up, but at least it was a lot easier since I was now below 10000 ft and there's more oxygen down here!
Veda camped about 14 miles from the trailhead as her ankle is still bugging her and it took her 10+ hours to do the last 15km (she left really early in the morning again). Hopefully the same tomorrow and she can finish the trail under her own (limping) power. I decided to hike a longer day so that tomorrow will be a shorter one and I can get to Durango before noon. Wonder is supposed to be camping with me as she has a flight out tomorrow that she needs to catch, but I kind of overshot the camp we were aiming for (Couldn't find the flat spot anywhere) so ended up hiking another couple of miles before I could find somewhere flat enough to camp. Hopefully she finds me!
Last night in a tent tonight, and I have to say that I'm looking forward to my bed again (not to mention a hot shower, clean clothes, and some fresh - not dehydrated - food). The trip has been fantastic, but no matter how long you're gone - 1 week/month/year - you're always ready to come home near the end.
