Today we had to wake up earlier than normal to make it to the bus on time or we would be left at the palace for our field trip on our first day in Rome. For the field trip today, we started out the day with a visit to the catacombs of St. Sebastian. During the tour of the catacombs, if you can imagine 23 American girls walking through small dirt trails surrounded by ancient graves—it was pretty interesting. Most of the girls that were in the group didn't really enjoy the experience of being that far underground with old tombs. I on the other hand loved it- even though they took out the bodies it was still very interesting. After the catacombs we then traveled on to the Capuchin Crypt which was more bones - this time it was the actual bodies/body parts of many old monks. It was interesting to see the way in which they placed the body parts in the 5 separate rooms. It was interesting yet a little too disturbing to have body parts of old monks hanging above your head. The crypt is where we learned of where the coloring and the name cappuccino came from—the coloring comes from the clothing that the monks wore, and the name followed suit with the capuchin monks. After leaving the crypt we walked on over to the Castel Sant'Angelo and Trastevere—these were amazing church, they were unbelievably gorgeous inside. Next up was the Garden of Oranges, as you can imagine this was a garden that was filled with orange trees—it reminded me of the Florida oranges. The view at the center of the garden was breathtaking—you could look out and see all of Rome. We then traveled to the mouth of truth. This is a stone figure of a man's face, of course with his mouth open. The legend says that whoever sticks his hand in the mouth and is found to be unfaithful loses the hand by having it bitten off by the man of truth. This place in Rome became famous from the movie made in the 50's staring Audrey Hepburn Roman Holiday. Once we left the mouth of truth we then traveled on to our final destination for the day which was the Knight of Malta Keyhole… this was extremely shocking. The knight of Malta keyhole is a keyhole in which you can look through the hole and see straight across Rome to the St. Peters Basillica. The pictures through the keyhole were so artistic looking, I just loved it.
