This morning we went on a hunt for red paint for our mural (as only the blue and yellow had arrived) as we wanted to make our day as productive as possible. However, after traipsing round almost all the paint shops in Jinja to no avail, we admitted defeat and headed to Nakanyonyi.
We painted as much as we could - the body of the LEH girl and the uniform of the Nakanyonyi girl. We were finished by about 12.30, and so spent time chatting to the girls before lunch. We joined them for lunch in eating posho (maize cooked with water) and beans, and sat with them in their domitory. It was the first time we'd seen triple bunkbeds, and we learned that 18 of them shared a room! However, it was clean and suprisingly spacious and the girls utilised the space well, hanging their laundry from the ceiling. While we struggled to get through our huge portion of posho, the girls polished theirs off quickly, and even had some of ours.
After lunch, we cleared up the painting materials and then went into town with Fidah. We were disappointed not to do more of the mural but unfortunately it was not possible without the red paint. Anyway, on our way into town we stopped off firstly at Welcome Home orphange, who stayed true to their name and were very welcoming. They invited us to their craft market tomorrow and to volunteer at the orphanage all day Thursday. Then we went to town, and chose fabric for trousers to be tailored, but got distracted in the process by all the interesting craft stuff on offer. We finally chose our 2 metres of fabric each and took them to the tailor with very specific instructions!
We went to the paint shop in a last attempt to get the red paint we ordered. It still had not arrived, and so we had to settle for reddish brown. Although we will be able to finish the girls, unfortunately this means the handprints will not be as colourful as we'd hoped!
After a short break at the hotel, we walked into Jinja to eat. We played cards yet again, this time with bats over our heads instead of mice (as in 2 Friends restaurant), and had a nice range of food. The slight disappointment was the sugar cane water which Fiona ordered that turned out to be a dull shade of green... It was a long walk home as we (almost!) got lost on the way back, but found our way eventually and are now ready to go to bed and wake up bright and early to finish the mural tomorrow!
