We woke up at about 8.30, ready for the bus to pick us up and take us to the school at 11. Firstly we went for a walk, to check out the local restaurants and hotels in Jinja. While walking, we met a boy that lived locally called Jeffrey, who joined our group for about 10 minutes, asking us about life in London. He thought we were a family! We found a beautiful restaurant called '2 Friends', with a pizza oven (!), we booked a table and were very excited. On the way back to the hotel, we met a woman taking her goat for a walk, and we took lots of pictures.
We arrived back at the hotel at 11, ready for the bus to pick us up, however we got a phone call saying there was a problem and we'd be getting picked up later. Imogen took the opportunity to beg the manager to switch rooms to ones where there was enough room on the floor for our suitcases. They eventually gave in and we are really happy with our new (bigger) rooms!
The bus finally came at 2, just in time for us to make our meeting with the generator man. We were briefly reunited with Fidah, and then started on the tour with the generator man to start counting all the lightbulbs in the school. On the way we saw the art teacher, and left the teachers to enjoy the lightbulb counting, while we talked to her about our plans for the week. We told her about our plans for the mural, and she seemed very willing to cooperate and involve all the girls.
We chatted to some of the girls while waiting for the prefect ceremony to start, which was an hour later than scheduled (in keeping with Ugandan time!). They were really interested in our daily school life, interests in music, and what we did in our spare time. We took the opportunity to ask them what they did when they went home, and were surprised when they liked watching 'Vampire Diaries' and going on facebook!
After a long chat, it was time for the prefect ceremony. We were fortunate to be invited to sit at the front, and watched the whole school join in singing the Ugandan National Anthem and their school song. This was followed by the swearing in of all 42 incoming prefects and the new head girl and deputies. It was really nice to see how excited all the girls were, as they cheered enthusiastically for their friends.
On the way back to the bus, we chatted to the young maths teacher who had just graduated from university. He gave us some details about the Ugandan education system, and said how lucky he felt to be working at a school like Nakanyonyi. We hopped onto the bus with Fidah and drove home. On the way back, she bought some maize cobs from the side of the street for us, which were delicious and tasted like popcorn!
At dinner, Jess was startled by some falling thatch from the roof, and looked up to see a tail hanging down from a birds nest directly above her head. We had a closer look and realised it was a mouse enjoying a delicious meal of birds eggs. Needless to say, we could not enjoy our delicious meal underneath, so we moved to a different table. After many card games (including S***head, which we renamed 'Pizzahead') we walked back to the hotel and went straight to bed.
Stay tuned!
