Why do Roosters only 'cock-a-doodle-do' in the morning? The Rooster on the otherside of the river wakes up at 4.30am....I'm sure that's not dawn!
Early this morning we went on a tour to the Alumina Refinery. Alumina is a white powder that is processed with Bauxite (small red rocks), caustic soda and steam!
The dust from the red rocks covers the entire plant and is a dull orange color (pictured).
The alumina is processed at 11,000 tonne per day and they employs roughly 1100 workers. It's a huge employer for the Gladstone area although most of the employees commute from other areas.
We then furthered our tour to Boyne Island Smelter, which uses a percentage of the 'alumina' and processes it with electricity and anoids (the anoids act as an electricity conductor) to creat Aluminium.
Once the Aluminium has been made it is cast into solid blocks (or rods) then sold.
At Boyne smelter they make over 1500 tonnes of Aluminium per day. 1 tonne = 70,000 Aluminium cans or 10kms of Silver-foil.
Fact: Gladstone is home to the only 'ice cream' stick producer in Australia, the only other place that makes them in the world is in Europe.
After returning from the Industry Tours, we went fishing (they mainly jumped out of the water in front of us), had some cold Qld beers and cranked up a big fire.
Tonight we roasted an Eggplant stuffed with cumin, garlic, mince and finely chopped vegetables. Absolutely divine!!
