Yesterday we drove out of the Wal-Mart and left Florida behind. Our goal was just to get home early enough for Nick to celebrate his birthday with his family.
We headed out early - when we are sleeping on the road, I am the first to wake up. In our old Class C RV, I did not have to bother anyone to take off driving. Hubby could stay in the back bed, the boys were on the Cab bed and the girl in the dinette. Now that we have the class A, we have to open the slideout to use the sofa bed and the top bunk has to be closed to drive. This means I cannot stealth out of places. I have to get hubby up and then move the children to the back bed and dinette in order to close the slides. So instead of 6AM, we are usually heading out at 7 or 8. I normally drive for a couple of hours, then stop for a breakfast break and then Hubby takes over driving. By this time I am ready for a nap.
On diving days this is normally our routine. Drive a couple of hours, stop for breakfast break, drive anywhere from 3-5 hrs., stop for lunch or have lunch while we are still on the road, drive another 4-5 with maybe a gas break, stop for dinner, then drive a few hours depending how we are feeling and how long we actually drove before and find a place for the night.
First leg we drove about 600 miles to another Wal-Mart in Fayetteville, WV. The more trips we take the more it's determined that on a good driving day with no delays 600 miles is the most we feel comfortable doing. I am now careful not to plan driving days with more than that, and make our plan loose enough that we are still on "schedule" if we have to drive less.
Today was the second leg and we had 441 miles left, again we left early in the morning and were home on time for Nick to go out to dinner with his family.
Overall was a great trip. In retrospect, we may have done too much. I grew up by the beach, so I have no problem being a beach bum. However, my children were asking what we are doing while we are there, so I felt obligated to plan outings instead of just showing them how you can just veg out at the beach.
We all agreed, next time we make it out there, it will be less outings and more beach time.
