Finally for our penguin lover Stephen we have managed to see some Penguins at Penguin Island near Rockingham south of Perth. It is run by the National Parks and the island is a sanctuary for all sorts of wildlife. Birds by the thousand breed there - loads of seagulls, pelicans and a variety of other migratory birds and of course the fairy penguin. We also saw a sealion and several king skinks - one of whom cheekily had a bite of both Cath and Matthew's toes thinking they were lunch!! - didn't hurt luckily. We watched the penguins in the sanctuary for a few hours and also found a few wild ones hiding in spots that we could see around the island.
We had been staying at a timeshare resort at Mandurah - very posh after nearly 5 months in a tent and we had a lovely time. The weather for most of the week was a bit iffy and Rich and Cath spent a lot of time working out the next phase of our lives in Macau.
We did however get to got to Heytesbury Stud, which is a beautiful property and had a good look around the facilities for the horses there and were fortunate enough to see one of their stallions servicing a mare - again very educational! Having seen turtles do the same thing a week or two earlier, the kids were quite accepting about it.
Mandurah though is the fastest growing town in WA and has a lot of canal development happening. It is quite cosmopolitan and I imagine a lot of Perth workers commute as the roads are pretty good and it only takes about 1 hour for the 85km.
