The area surrounding Albany is lovely and the William Bay NP was especially nice with a lovely swimming area called Greens Pool which is protected by large boulders and its neighbouring Elephant Rocks (pictured here). The only problem was that it was blowing a howling gale and the sun though warm was not warm enough to counteract the icy wind. Rich, Claire and Matthew swam but Stephen and Cath decided that it was too cold. We did however manage to camp at a very pretty spot called Parry's beach and we were quite a long way back and therefore protected from the wind. The water colour of the southern ocean beaches is clear and green where they are protected or else foaming white surf.
Albany itself was interesting as it had a lot of military history as a staging point for men departing for war. There was a terrific fort with guns that worked (not for firing, but for manoeuvering) and good views from the gun emplacements. There was also a terrific museum which had an exhibit on "an Almost French Australia". Certainly there was much french exploration of the WA coast and I hadnt realised that LaPerouse was only 8 days behind Captain Cook in arriving into Botany Bay! It was fascinating.
