Kalbarri bills itself as the premier seaside town in WA - its rather a big call, but it is quite a nice place, but cold!! Amazing since it was so hot just a short time ago north of Port Hedland and it has been getting steadily colder since. The wind is still howling from the southwest and we are told that this is quite normal here. Indeed not far from Kalbarri in a place called Greenough there are trees that have been blown so that they are growing horizontal to the ground and yet would be 10 metres or so "tall" - a very strange sight as you drive along. Kalbarri National park is in 2 parts - river gorges of the Murchison River and the coastal gorges. The walk was not a good one having been spoilt by Karajini. It was trudging through a lot of sand and was fly blown and as a result we walked the 8km as quick as we could and did it in 3 hours 10 minutes. The flies were very very annoying here. The coastal gorges reminded Rich and I of the Great Ocean Road in Victoria - though slightly less spectacular. We did however go to a very interesting Seahorse Sanctuary, where the owners marine biologists, breed seahorses for the pet shop market. We saw a few different species from just one hour old to 6 months, at which time they are ready for delivery to the pet shops. They also grow there own food - shrimp which is then frozen and defrosted and fed to the seahorses as one of the key things they have to learn is to eat food that is not live as pets. It was absolutely fascinating. We also learnt that male seahorses have a pouch and the female deposits her eggs in the pouch and it is the male who is pregnant and he (depending on the species) can deliver up to 1000 babies!!
