Karajini National Park I think has spoilt us for all other National Parks I think - it is simply magnificent and we have been to some pretty special ones before. The reason it is so good is not just the scenery but the walks that you can do within the park. We did all the walks you could do without specialist abseiling gear. The walks are graded from class 1 through to class 6, with class 1 being wheelchair suitable and class 6 requiring abseiling or rock climbing equipment and you had to notify the ranger. We did all the walks except class 6. The class 5 walks were wading through water or swimming and so it was good that we went in October as it was warm enough for a lovely swim on every single walk. It had been exceptionally hot in Broome, but it was slightly cooler at Karajini which as it is inland from Port Hedland was a surprise. There was heaps of water so every walk was terrific. The walk shown here is in Hancock Gorge and has three features - the amphitheatre which is carved out of the gorge wall, then the spider walk where for much of it you need to have your hands and feet on both gorge walls to walk down above the flowing water (which isn't too deep anyway) and then Kermits Pool which is a very refreshing swim before the water drops 40 metres or so to Junction Pool. After Kermits pool it is class 6. This walk and the Handrail Pool, which has a 3 metre rope to abseil down to the pool were the firm favourites of the whole family. We had a thoroughly terrific time here.
The wildflowers were also beautiful here - see some of the photos in WA wildflowers photo album. The campground had pit toilets (as do nearly all National Parks throughout the country) and they were very clean, but also popular with the wildlife - several redback spiders lived in the one near us and one night I decided to go to another toilet after discovering a snake had taken up residence inside - small, but still I am not totally comfortable with snakes and view all of them as dangerous! Of course there were loads of lizards, particularly perentie, kangaroos and we even saw some Australian Bustards which are rather odd looking birds, almost as tall as emus.
Karajini is another highly recommended spot in Australia, especially if you love to bushwalk.
