We put in a solid day's drive from Point Samson and arrived in Exmouth in the late afternoon, slightly deranged from being in the car for so long (we only usually do 2-3 hours at a time these days), and perhaps also from all the lollies we ate along the way. We found Lisa, Steve and Torah at the caravan park, and it was a joyous reunion, even though we'd only been apart a few days. Lee had his fishing buddy back, and Lea had her cardgame/beachgoing buddy back. All was well with the world again.
The next day we checked out the sights of Exmouth in the morning, and spent the afternoon fishing off the Learmonth Jetty. Lea finally broke her fishing hoodoo and caught 4 squid, so it was salt & pepper calamari for dinner to celebrate.
Stocked up and then headed around to Cape Range National Park, on the western side of the peninsula, which is fringed by Ningaloo Reef. What an amazing place! We set up camp for what was originally going to be a couple of days, and we ended up staying for a week.
The fishing was awesome, it wasn't often that the boys came back to camp empty handed. The catch ranged from spangled emperor to golden trevally to king salmon with a few freaky fish in between (and almost a 3 metre hammerhead shark - see photos). The snorkelling was great too, and with the reef coming right into shore in a lot of places, it was very easy to access. Unfortunately for Lee, there was no fishing allowed at the snorkelling sites, which just led him to get frustrated, with muffled screams heard coming from his snorkel whenever he saw a big fish.
Another amazing sight was all turtles we saw. At one beach there were literally dozens swimming around, coming to shore every now and then for a rest, then getting back out there. One day we even got to snorkel with one, very "Finding Nemo"-esque.
Conscious of time ticking away, we all sadly waved goodbye to Cape Range and Ningaloo, and made our way on down the coast.
