We left the Port Hedland Sports Ground early this morning and headed to a picnic spot called Pretty Pool with a river running out to the beach, where we stopped for breakfast with a view. Next we headed to the port to watch the massive iron ore laden ships and their tugs and pilot boat head out to sea. They were quite a sight and very impressive. Port Hedland is the biggest port by tonnage in Australia exporting over 200 billion tonne per year. We spent some time chatting to a very interesting grey nomad couple who are farmers in WA's wheat belt.
Around lunchtime we headed off (instead of lunch we took some fruit into the car to eat) and drove all of 75km south to Whim Creek, an historic pub half way between Port Hedland and Karratha. The owners let you stay free overnight in their huge parking lot and ask just that you enjoy a meal or drink in the pub. The hotel is mainly used today as accommodation for miners but it has a colourful history including a resident alcoholic camel that used to drink patrons' beers. Today it is owned by the Ngarluma Aboriginal Corporation and there is a memorial in the grounds to 5 brothers from one local Indigenous family who served Australia, including two KIA.
We spent a relaxing afternoon checking out the historical photos inside the pub and in the grounds talking to the resident cockatoos and corellas, with a big bowl of wedges and a beer to keep us refreshed. Very pleasant way to spend the afternoon!
We spent the evening in the caravan relaxing as usual.
Good night from what feels like the middle of nowhere xx
