We are still in Mount Gambier and started the day at the Lady Nelson Visitor Centre where they have a display about the history of the area. Then we spent a bit of time at the local market buying some locally caught smoked trout and sampling some deep fried spiral cut potatoes and lamb skewers. Next we drove towards the coast to see the impressive Tantanoola Caves (really pretty limtestone and dolomite rock). We drove by Canundra Wind Farm, a 46MW wind power project made up of 23 Vestas 2.0 MW wind turbines (I sound knowledgeable thanks to Google!) but it does look impressive,
Next we visited Port MacDonnell, the southern most town in South Australia. This is a small (and rather ugly) port town famous for its rock lobster fishing industry. We drove around and discovered an incredibly beautiful coastline just beyond the port, with windswept coastlines, limestone cliffs and rugged rock formations. It looked glorious bathed in the late afternoon golden sunshine.
We drove back to Mount Gambier via Mount Schank, which is part of the youngest volcanic field in Australia having erupted around 5,000 years ago.
Then it was time to visit the Rail District where the town was putting on a festival fundraiser in aid of the Leukemia Foundation and the World's Greatest shave. There was great food, wine, market stalls and music. Guest of honour was the very talented Louise Adams and her band performing for her home town crowd.
Feels like we've done quite a lot tonight. So from Mount Gambier, we wish you sweet dreams and happy thoughts x
