Today we drove through the central Flinders Ranges National Park - despite the fact we have a dog and shouldn't enter. It seems to us that South Australia is quite money hungry in terms of its national parks as you have to pay to enter each one, and then if you are camping you pay an extra fee.
The drive itself was spectacular in some sections, with distant craggy mountains and undulating hills bordering vast plains and rich valleys. And yes, I did find myself clicking away with the camera - a lot, Especially with all the wildlife including emus (so funny as they run away), wallabies, kangaroos, goats, eagles and lots of sheep. We stopped first to see the Kanyaka waterhole (had to wear our mosquito nettings over our hats as we walked as the flies were viscous) and homestead ruins and then continued to the town of Hawker where we ate lunch and continued on to Wilpena Pound (where unfortunately we couldn't get out and explore as its in the national park). We then passed through the tiny town of Blinman where they run underground mine tours and continued on a good dirt road through Parachilna Gorge, which was spectacular at every turn. We were thinking about staying the night at one of the free camps in the gorge but felt it was early enough to keep driving. We ended up pulling into a roadside rest area at Hookina Creek just north of Hawker. Here, despite a zillion flies (hence the decision to cook and eat indoors tonight) we were treated to a gorgeous sunset and being able to watch the colours change over the Flinders Ranges.
Time to get cosy in our little house and watch a movie - tonight's pick is Sicario.
Good night, sleep tight xx
