Woke up to a bright sunny sky outside my bedroom window today. We were camped on the beach basically in a car park of a tourist attraction not far from Streaky Bay. A couple in a motor home also stayed here last night but they were up early (unlike us) and were gone by 7.30am.
Made a coffee and enjoyed drinking it sitting outside in the sun, then started to pack up and eat breakfast. Shame all our washing, which we'd hung out last night, was still wet with morning dew.
We headed back to Streaky Bay, emptied our toilet, filled the tanks with water (first time we had to pay for filling water) and did a final shop before the Nullarbor. Then we continued driving, checking out a couple of beaches along the way and stopping for lunch in the small bayside town of Smoky Bay. It was lovely sitting on the beach in the shade of a thatched beach hut as we ate our roast chicken and salad wraps.
Despite having had lunch, by the time we arrived in Ceduna mid afternoon, I was ready to devour some local Pacific oysters. First we stopped at the visitor centre and had a look around town. Then it was time for those delicious oysters at The Oyster Bar, a little shack on the outskirts of town with a roof top area where you can eat your seafood and watch the highway traffic and the ocean in the distance. I had a dozen oysters (naturale) and Gadi had fish and chips - both were delicious.
We decided to head out a little way from town to a free camp past Denial Bay, on the other side of the bay from Ceduna, called Nadia Landing. We are camped on a rocky foreshore on an isolated road, with one other caravan nearby. The sun began to set soon after we arrived, turning into another magnificent sunset. Time to make a BBQ dinner, watch the sun's rays disappear to be replaced by bright shining moonlight over the bay.
Pity the peace and quiet was shattered by my panic over an ant infestation in one of our food cupboards. They were crawling all over some of our sweet food, which I had to spray and throw out. Anyway, we cleaned out the cupboard, which is always a good thing when you're living in such a small space.
Can't believe we've been on the road over a month already. The time has gone so quickly as we travel and see something new each day.
It's great to be able to catch up with family and friends via Facebook, Messenger, Whatsapp and the phone. It makes the distance seem not quite as great as it really is.
Heading out across the Nullarbor tomorrow will be a defining part of our trip, as it is something to tick off on my bucket list and I guess it's a kind of rite of passage for travellers, especially caravan nomads. I do feel a bit apprehensive about this trek, especially about keeping Cadbury safe from bait that we know is everywhere out here, also managing with water and where to empty the toilet. Mind you, we have probably 200 liters on board all up, including extra containers in the car and on the front of the van. I'm not so worried about the isolation, driving the long, straight road or the distance (some 1,200km).
Better get some sleep before we head out tomorrow to our next adventure - the Nullarbor!
Night night xx
