Spent some time talking to the farmer who owns Murphy's Haystacks and the 13,000 acres of surrounding farmland. He is third generation farming this land but the attraction has only been open to the public since 1990.
We headed out on the dirt road all the way to Point Labatt to see the sea lion colony, which was fantastic as we got to see many sea lions basking on the rocks, swimming in rock pools and play fighting each other. One baby sea lion seemed to have lost his family as we heard him crying and screaming on his own a long way from the others. We watched as he (she?) eventually made his way back to the others but they didn't really seem to accept him. It was great to watch the sea lion antics and Cadbury also watched and listened intently from between the bars of the wooden platform railing.
Next we headed into Streaky Bay, checked out the town and ate lunch along the foreshore, chilling out and enjoying a little bit of afternoon sun.
Then it was time to find somewhere to camp for the night, so we headed out of town to Cape Bauer, with its scenic cliff top scenery and stops along the way. The most beautiful was the whistling rocks and blowhole. The whistling rocks was amazing. You couldn't see anything except for some dramatic rugged rocks but the sound was exactly like a pent up whistle as the huge rush of the swell and tide pushes water inside caves in the rocks and tremendous pressure builds and sends spray out as well as a loud whooshing sound. The blowhole was less dramatic as the waves weren't big enough for it to 'blow'. But the whole area was really lovely especially as we were there in the late afternoon and the sky was turning a soft pink and lavender.
We attempted to find a campsite along the cliffs but struggled to find a suitable place for the car and caravan that wasn't soft sand to get in, so we ended up coming back to the whistling rock parking area and camped the night here - just in time for a magic sunset on the beach!
Time to make dinner and relax for the evening with one of our recorded TV series.
Good night, sleep tight xx - I know we will as we have the sound of the ocean (yet again) to lull us to sleep.
