It has been a constant battle attempting to stop people walking around at night on their own, especially without a torch. People just aren’t understanding how dangerous it is (lots of elephant and a lone buffalo). Last night we were sitting by the camp fire and I saw these enormous white tusks out of the corner of my eye – a huge bull elephant was between us and centre house. Then I notice a person standing close to it. Assuming it was the askari trying to scare it away I didn’t panic, that was until I saw the camera flash! I jumped up and ran towards the person and the elephant. The flash had startled the elephant and it was backing off but going a bit crazy: ears flapping, trunk swinging etc. I grabbed this guy and told him to move. He was protesting that he hadn’t got his photo but I pulled him by the arm and told him to run! He couldn’t understand why I looked so panicked!
Today we took them all out on a game drive, half in the afternoon and half after dinner. Before anyone left I made them all sign the forms saying that if they got eaten by a lion, skewered by an elephant, trampled by a buffalo etc, then it’s not our fault.
We saw next to nothing in the way of game! One girl had requested that we saw a giraffe and then a lion (as if it were a zoo) but unfortunately I failed to arrange it. On the evening drive they saw even less. Ironically Alfie (with whom you’re almost guaranteed not to see anything) saw a big pride of lions that night on a different part of the ranch!
